3yo filly Sunrise has had a flying start to her second preparation on Australian soil, winning two races by a combined margin of 10 lengths!
She broke a long standing track record at Kembla Grange when winning by 7.3L 1st up, gliding past the post in 55.58s over 1000m. The writing was on the wall for a fantastic preparation ahead when runner up Quartz Legend franked the form, winning a similar race a fortnight later.
The filly, by Charm Spirit was bred by Windsor Park Stud and had her first 6 race starts in New Zealand. She always indicated she had speed on speed and only knew one way having won her maiden by 5 lengths, running 2nd in two other races before leading and being rolled in the 2yo Karaka Millions Listed and Group 2 Matamata Breeders over 1200m.
She was purchased by JJJ Racing/Mitch Beer Racing at the Gold Coast Broodmare sale last year for $45,000 and full credit must go to Mitch and his team, for spending a lot of time teaching her how to harness her energy and save some fuel for late in the race.
Sunrise delighted her ownership team by backing up her career best performance at Kembla Grange, winning again at Randwick on Saturday, leading from pillar to post and beating the older horses over 1100m in the BM72 Midway.
Rachel King guided her throughout the event and the pair powered away from their rivals at the 300m mark and never looked back.
"I must thank the ownership group" Mitch Beer said. "Last preparation, we knew how good she was, but I just told them that she wasn't physically and mentally ready.
"When we got her, all she wanted to do in her trackwork was bolt. We had to bite the bullet and teach her how to settle so that she could do what she did today. To win this race is a terrific result."
A big thank you must also go out to Coriah Keatings and Rachel King, as well as Blake Spriggs who did a lot of work with her last preparation. Mick Gannon and Steph Grentell were behind the purchase at the Gold Coast and it has been a real team effort by all to get her to where she is today.
The next target for Sunrise is likely to be the 1100m Denise's Joy Listed race for 3yo's over the Scone Carnival.
